Create a chain-reaction machine out of found and repurposed items. Enjoy STEAM fun for the whole family!
At this STEAM Saturday, we will create Rube Goldberg machines.
A Rube Goldberg machine is a complex, whimsical contraption that completes a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way. It's named after cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who popularized the concept with his humorous illustrations of intricate machines. These machines usually consist of a series of steps, where each step triggers the next one, leading to the final outcome.
The fun of creating a Rube Goldberg machine lies in its entertaining and elaborate design, which showcases a chain reaction of cause and effect. The more creative the approach, the better! Typically, a Rube Goldberg machine is a hands-off device that operates on its own once initiated, using the energy transferred through each step to propel the next one. While it may not be the most efficient or practical solution, it's a fun and engaging way to explore the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) disciplines.
Our goal will be ringing a bell to call the librarian.
