Get your kicks on Route 66 ... at Hardesty! Throw it back to the '50s and discover your Kids Read reading identity! Sponsored by the Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries.
We will highlight Route 66 as the ultimate American adventure, featuring a Route 66-themed scavenger hunt where children search for iconic Tulsa-area landmarks such as the Blue Whale and the Meadow Gold sign.
Attendees will become junior detectives, channeling Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, hunting for clues and uncovering fascinating facts about Route 66 and life in the 1950s.
We will have a Cadillac photo booth with silly 1950s props that will appeal to children who love humor and funny visuals.
We will have fantasy books and movies published/released in the 1950s, including Cinderella, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia, etc. available to check out. A themed fantasy trivia activity will put their imagination and mythical knowledge to the test.
We will feature the book Harold and the Purple Crayon (published in 1955). Children and adults can write their favorite library memory on butcher paper in purple crayons. We will hang up the finished product in the children’s department.
Attendees will create their “My Favorite Series Character at the Sock Hop” paper dolls, complete with 1950s-style outfits. This activity will let kids pick out their favorite series character and imagine them enjoying a sock hop dance.
