Maple Meeting Room

Have you used FamilySearch but mostly searched U.S. census, vital or immigration records? Registration is required. For adults and teens.

This workshop takes the next step by exploring FamilySearch’s international record collections and how to search more effectively when records, names, places and languages become less familiar. Genealogy Associate James Toburen will demonstrate how to locate international collections through FamilySearch’s historical records, catalog, images and research wiki. Attendees will learn how to search by country, region, record type and locality, and how to use FamilySearch’s tools even when a collection is only partially indexed or not searchable by name.

The session will focus on practical strategies for working with international records, including church records, civil registration, census records, immigration records, probate records and military collections. Examples may include records from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and other regions represented in FamilySearch’s collections.

The session includes:
· A live demo of international record searching on FamilySearch.org
· Tips for using the FamilySearch Catalog and Research Wiki
· Strategies for browsing unindexed or partially indexed collections
· Examples of international church records, civil registration, census records, immigration records and other record types
· Tips for working with unfamiliar languages, place names and changing jurisdictions
· A Q&A session with TCCL genealogy staff

Each attendee will receive a one-page handout summarizing best practices for international searching on FamilySearch, including tips for using the catalog, wiki, images and browse-only collections.
